The cosmetics are in excellent condition for its age and it has an attractive, even-look black color with no ultraviolet fading present. The set screw has no rust. The diagonal jiggles very lightly inside the diagonal body, which is normal for these units. It does not shift nearly enough to affect collimation of the images seen at the eyepiece. I have tested this on many different focal length model 50mm to 80mm refractors and all images given with this diagonal are equal to other .965-inch Vixen of Japan-made 90-degree prism diagonals.

    Description

This auction is for a 1986 Celestron (Vixen or Daiichi Kogaku of Japan)
.965-inch 90-degree prism diagonal. It will come with both original caps.
These little Cometron diagonals came as stock equipment on the CO 60, CO 60 Deluxe, and the CO 60 Equatorial. When the Cometron pale blue-style refractors were ended by the company, this diagonal lived a short life as inclusive equipment on the very earliest Celestron Firstscope 60 EQs. They were never offered in the catalogs for separate purchase.
This exact diagonal with the horizontal ribbing also came with the Bushnell (Daiichi Kogaku of Japan) Sky Chief III 60mm refractors and the rarely-seen, direct from Vixen of Japan Cometron 60 White, or the "CO-60-W"
These are molded after the late 1960s-mid 1970s Carton Optical and Atco aluminum wedge .965-inch diagonals. Aside from the ribbing texture, they are the same dimensions. The difference is this diagonal is a single, unitary design of pressed polyvinyl chloride hard plastic; (2) halves of the diagonal mold adhered together with the prism caged within.
Also, this diagonal is NOT aperture stopped and gives the full advantage of incoming light. So this diagonal will work on any focal ratio small refractor without any worry of vignetting. Whether in a f/16 Tasco 60TE or a 50mm f/4 guide scope, the incoming light cone will not be cut-off.
The prism is not a slab of glass, but the same, solid-thickness triangular design you find on the all metal or metal-and-polyurethane diagonals (also made by Vixen at times) marketed by Orion and Celestron at the same time. It gives outstanding views in cooperation with a well-made refractor objective and great quality ocular.
The diagonal weighs a light 2.0 ounces.
This is a very nice diagonal and can be an upgrade to other small refractors that came with inferior, narrow-exiting diagonals that give dimmer-than-average images. Lightweight, but no sacrifice to poor optics design.
    Packed with great care.
